LI yuanjiang,Godfather of GZ Daily
Yesterday,news about the former publisher of Guangzhou Daily, Li Yuanjiang(黎元江)caught every one's eyeball. According to the reporting appeared in all major local newspaper except for Guangzhou Daily, Li is said to be the pioneer of prisoner who succeed in a doctoral course ,and the certificate was presented to him by the professor from China People's University in person.Li Yuanjiang was put into jail in 2004 with a 12-year prison sentence ,and the charge brought against for taking bribe of RMB 490 thousand yuan while serving as the director of propaganda department of CCP GZ. To most of the Chinese media person,Li is best known as the godfather of Guangzhou Daily,the most commercially successful daily in China.
I wonder how he decide to pick up the topic of his doctoral thesis,which came out in the title of Economic Globalization and Internationalization of China Media(《经济全球化与中国报业跨国化》).Although it seems to be the fashionable way to keep up the global village development,to China media, the international way still have a long way to go.Guangzhou Daily, the Son of Li Yuanjiang ,as he mentioned on various occasion, has been trying to get it listed in the domestic stock market for ten years or so.For a mouthpiece paper of CCP GZ ,going to be listed in the market and commercial empowered could be no easy way, and the Li 's bribe scandal surely made its way toward the stock market worse. Nevertheless,nowadays GZ Daily seems to foresee its successful launch in the stock market.
Anyway,it is in a rare occasion for the authority to have a celebrity in jail got exposure in this way.Last year Legal Daily had Li's first story since in jail.Li was reported as running a prison community newspaper, appear to enjoy good performance for a shorten jail serving time.Of course,on either occasion,he expressed his deepest love for newspaper career.I must add some supporting evidence for his fantasy love on media.According to the friends previously worked in GZ Daily,Li asked his colleague to fax him the frontage of next-day newspaper even in his oversea trip.And Li was always serving as the "executive" editor of front page despite of his official appointment as the director of Propaganda department,the former employee said.
As a professional media icon,Li's scandal broght out the sensational feeling among China media circle.The turnover of GZ Daily was over one billion Yuan under his presidency, so successful that he was unforgivable for committing the bribe crime based on RMB 490 thousand yuan charge.As the mouthpiece of CCP GZ,the Daily was not going to challenge the authority in any serious manner.So there were pointless to name him as the victim of official cracking down movement on the media.
However,someone do suggest the charge brought against him motivated from political interest group.There was one accusation against him,that he founded an ad company based in Hongkong without the authorization of Mainland officials,and pooled the revenue of 84405 million HKD (对未经批准在香港注册成立公司并违规截留、少计境外广告费收入港币共8440.5万元，应负主要领导责任).Nothing mentioned specifically on the use of money which sounded strange. Someone suggested that money pooled in HongKong company went to some officials in Beijing,so as to gain more free room for GZ Daily development.
Should that assumption proved to be true, I think it is no surprise for LI's show time in these days.He is not a political dissident,instead,he probably still enjoy some connection with the official in Beijing.Anyway,he did not sell them out in his difficult time. 12 years serving time in jail? Too long.I believe that Li would be ripe for his reward soon.
